Zach Young, Director of Music Ministries
Usually when I write a newsletter article, I have a single topic to expound upon. Today, I have three things I’d like to say, none of which are long enough for an entire article. Please indulge my wandering mind, and thanks for reading!
Men’s Choir Appreciation
I want to extend my gratitude to all the men who sang in the choir last Sunday (Father’s Day). It was especially powerful to hear you leading the congregation in two great hymns of the faith, and the anthem was a strong reminder that we as men and fathers are called to reflect and revere our Heavenly Father. In the past three decades, the nature of church music has changed tonally and lyrically in ways that have alienated many men. Not so at Stephens Valley Church. We sing strong and robust hymns in ranges that accommodate all voices, and we fully expect our men to obey the Lord and promote the unity of the church by singing enthusiastically. Our choir loft filled with men singing confidently and joyfully was a powerful witness that the church and the world needed to see and hear. Thank you!
Summer Sing
The Sanctuary Choir is taking a break from rehearsing in July, and in keeping with our tradition, I want to invite ANYONE who can sing to fill the choir loft on any or all Sundays in July. Simply come to the Choir Room (2nd floor, across the hall from the elevator) at 10:20 a.m. You’ll receive music for the congregational hymns, we will run through them, and that’s it! No extra rehearsals are required. For many centuries, church music leaders have agreed that congregations sing better when led by a choir. So, please help by participating in “summer sing.” Open to youth and adults.
Concert This Sunday at 6:00 PM
While hot dogs and apple pie have received plenty of attention and publicity, Sunday evening’s main event is a patriotic concert presented by our Sanctuary Choir and a guest orchestra of local professional musicians. They have prepared music that will help us thank God for our freedom, honor those who fought and died to protect it, and remember our responsibilities as Christian citizens to preserve it. The program will conclude with several rousing selections fitting for a 250th birthday celebration! Please come, bring a friend, and celebrate with us. The Fellowship Hall doors will open at 5:30.
