The SVC Women's annual Christmas Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, December 3, at 11:30 a.m. at the Junior League of Nashville (2202 Crestmoor Road). Please park at the Mall of Green Hills. Candy Christmas, founder of The Bridge Ministry, will be our guest speaker.
Yes, that's her real name and she began her career at the age of thirteen when she recorded her first album with her family, The Hemphills. Candy became one of the genre's most respected singers and was awarded six GMA Dove Awards as a member of the group Heirloom. Although successful, Candy was beset by depression. When she was advised that medication and hospitalization were required, a friend took her to the inner-city Jefferson Street bridge where homeless people were camped. They were also hungry. Candy went home, cooked a big pot of jambalaya, and took it to feed the hungry, poor, and homeless. She then went to Walmart and bought mittens, socks, scarves, and coats for the people under the bridge. Each week her ministry grew. "Some nights we'd have 500 people under that bridge," she says. "I'll tell you this: I'm not depressed anymore...God has given me a grace and a mercy for people who can't help themselves."
Candy's daughter, Jasmine Sunshine Brady, who is also a Gospel singer, will be our musical guest for the luncheon. Our mission emphasis for this event will also be The Bridge Ministry which serves the homeless. Each woman is invited to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the children that Candy serves.
